Fishing Techniques

Techniques We Use

At Bite Me Charters, we employ a variety of fishing techniques to target different species in the Andaman waters. Our experienced guides will help you master these techniques to maximize your fishing success.

Popping

Surface action for GT and other predators

Popping is one of the most exciting techniques for targeting Giant Trevally (GT) and other aggressive surface feeders. This method involves using specialized lures called "poppers" that create splashes and bubbles when jerked across the water's surface, mimicking distressed baitfish.

Best For

Giant Trevally, Dogtooth Tuna, Queenfish

Gear

Heavy spinning or conventional gear, 80-100lb braid

When

Early morning and late afternoon

Where

Reef edges, drop-offs, current lines

Popping Technique

Jigging

Vertical presentation for deep water species

Jigging involves working metal lures vertically through the water column, typically in deeper water. This technique is highly effective for species like Dogtooth Tuna, Groupers, and Snappers. We practice both slow-pitch jigging for finesse presentations and speed jigging for aggressive species.

Best For

Dogtooth Tuna, Groupers, Snappers

Gear

Specialized jigging rods, high-speed reels

When

Throughout the day, especially tide changes

Where

Deep reefs, underwater pinnacles

Trolling

Covering water for pelagic species

Trolling involves pulling lures or baits behind a moving boat to target pelagic species. This is our go-to technique for Sailfish, Wahoo, and other open-water predators. We use a variety of lures including diving plugs, skirted lures, and natural baits depending on conditions.

Best For

Sailfish, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Tuna

Gear

Heavy trolling rods, lever drag reels

When

Morning and afternoon, calm days

Where

Offshore waters, current lines

Bottom Fishing

Targeting reef dwellers

Bottom fishing is the technique of presenting baits directly on or near the sea floor to target reef species. We use both conventional bottom fishing techniques with heavy weights and more finesse approaches with lighter tackle. This method is excellent for Groupers, Snappers, and other bottom-dwelling species.

Best For

Groupers, Snappers, Coral Trout

Gear

Heavy conventional gear, braided line

When

All day, especially during slack tide

Where

Reef structures, drop-offs

Other Techniques We Use

Live Baiting

Using live baitfish to target large predators like GT and Dogtooth Tuna. We catch fresh bait on location for maximum effectiveness.

Fly Fishing

For anglers looking for the ultimate challenge, we offer fly fishing opportunities for species like Giant Trevally and Bonefish.

Micro Jigging

A finesse approach using small jigs to target a variety of species. Great for when the fish are being finicky or for lighter tackle enthusiasts.

Choosing the Right Technique

Our experienced guides will help you select the best technique based on conditions, target species, and your personal preferences. Here's a quick guide to help you understand what might work best:

Technique Best Species Best Conditions Gear Required Skill Level
Popping GT, Dogtooth Tuna, Queenfish Calm seas, good visibility Heavy spinning gear Intermediate to Advanced
Jigging Dogtooth Tuna, Groupers, Snappers Current flow, deeper water Jigging rod and reel Intermediate
Trolling Sailfish, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi Offshore, blue water Trolling rods and lures Beginner to Advanced
Bottom Fishing Groupers, Snappers, Coral Trout Reef structures Heavy conventional gear Beginner to Intermediate
Live Baiting GT, Dogtooth Tuna, Big Trevallies When live bait is available Heavy conventional gear Intermediate
